Update planners with Agenda and HW

  1. Announcements:
    • Students should stand for the Pledge of Allegiance, then listen QUIETLY to the announcements while they update their planners.
  2. Article: "Texting 911? Emergency Line Just Doesn't Get It"
    • Complete the following tasks in order. All completed work must be handed in, stapled in order, before the end of the period for credit!
      1. Quick Write, complete on binder paper:
        • Currently, 911, the public emergency number, cannot take text messages. People must call in if they need help. What do you think the advantages to an emergency number that can handle text messages?
        • Write for 5 minutes, then share as a class.
      2. Vocabulary: Use Cornell Notes to Copy the following words and define them. Use the dictionaries and your own knowledge. (you can continue on the same binder paper)

      5. Copy the Writing Task (continue on the same binder paper)
          • In the article "Texting 911? Emergency Line Just Doesn't Get It," Theola Labbe-DeBose argues that public safety communication needs an update in order to keep up with technology. What does Labbe-DeBose say about "modernizing" the public safety system? According to Labbe-DeBose, what should local and sate governments think about when trying to update and digitize the 911 emergency number system?
      6. Read the article aloud together as a whole class.
      7. Read the article silently to yourself and mark the text:
          1. Circle key terms/words (repeated words, etc.)
          2. Underline the problem in paragraph 3.
          3. Underline what the author says about updating 911 in paragraphs 5, 6, 7, and 9.
